MEN VS. WOMEN: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE WHEN IT COMES TO FACELIFT SURGERY?

MEN VS. WOMEN: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE WHEN IT COMES TO FACELIFT SURGERY?

Most people associate facelifts and other cosmetic surgical procedures with women. While it is certainly the case that more women undergo facelift surgeries than men, it may be surprising to hear that, according to a study by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over 11,851 facelifts were performed on men in 2014 alone. It’s true that this was out of over 128,000 facelifts nationally, but it is still a significant number that demands proper attention. Facelifts were in the top five most popular cosmetic surgical procedures performed on men in 2014, along with nose reshaping (55,000), eyelid surgery (29,000), breast reduction (26,000) and liposuction (24,000).

The truth of the matter is that men are a much larger part of the cosmetic surgery world than many might think. Chicago-based board-certified cosmetic surgeon Dr. Anthony J. Geroulis has many male patients at his Northfield outpatient medical facility, North Shore Center for Facial Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery. Dr Geroulis explains, “Male patients make up a large part of my practice. While many of my male patients are seeking procedures such as rhinoplasty and eyelid surgery, a large percentage seek facelift surgery, as well. There are several reasons for this, including pressure to look youthful due to delayed retirement or a desire for facial rejuvenation caused by their spouse’s recent cosmetic surgical procedure.”

Dr. Geroulis’ approach to facelift surgery for men and women is essentially the same. The main goal (no matter the patient) is to maintain natural results. It is essential that the patient doesn’t look tight, pulled, fake or overdone following their facelift surgery. Chicago-based surgeon Dr. Geroulis starts each consultation appointment by talking to the potential patient about their goals and performing a detailed facial analysis. This is the best way for Dr. Geroulis to determine the ideal surgical plan for this individual patient.

During a facelift surgery, Chicago-based surgeon Dr. Geroulis expertly corrects the damage caused by aging and gravity. This involves restoring the natural shape of the face, particularly in the lower third of the face, by readjusting the excess of loose skin tissue and removing skin folds and fat pads around the chin and neck. Many men and women develop jowls, or excess skin around the chin and neck, as they age, which can make them appear much older.

There are a few differences when it comes to how Dr. Geroulis approaches facelift surgery with men versus women, and it all comes down to their biological facial structures. Men, by nature, have stronger and more defined facial features; whereas, women’s facial features are typically more delicate. This means that the goal and desired outcome is different. For women, Dr. Geroulis’ aim is to restore the natural oval shape to the face and to smooth out the neckline for a more defined and elegant appearance. For men, the aim is to skillfully remodel the face for a stronger, more masculine and sharper chin and neck contour.
